As anticipated, the observed rate decreased with decreasing pH for those amines that were ionized in the pH range studied, but the rate decrease could not be explained solely in terms of ionization of the base. The results are interpreted in terms of a model in which the rate is dependent on two equilibria, the ionization of the base and its partition between the microsomes and the aqueous incubation media.
