In vivo formation of the N-chloramines of drugs has been postulated as a cause of chronic toxicities of drugs (e.g. see Furst and Uetrecht, 1993). Nitrosamines are a class that contains very potent carcinogens, but the yields are likely to be low (Mirvish, 1995) and the mass of drugs in the water is very low.
