Based on the reported tissue concentration of UDPG [55] and paracrine/autocrine action of UDPG [18,20,52], UDPG likely acts at relatively high concentrations. Indeed, several studies have employed 10−4 M or higher concentrations of UDPG in their experiments and have successfully demonstrated that 10−4 M UDPG is capable of affecting the behavior of human airway epithelial cells, murine glia cells and rat cortical astrocytes in vitro [21,22,56].

Although it is common to employ saturating concentrations of substrate and co-substrate in enzyme assays, it is noteworthy that the concentration of the co-substrate UDPGA usually used in assays of glucuronidation, 3 mM, is substantially higher than hepatic concentrations in the few fish that have been studied, where UDPGA concentrations of 0.02 mM (carp) and 0.12 mM (trout) were reported [71]. In the channel catfish, which spawn in late spring, there were seasonal differences in hepatic content of UDPGA, with average concentrations of 0.36 ± 0.07 nmol UDPGA/g liver (mean ± S.D., n = 7) in November/December and 0.13 ± 0.03 (n = 8) in May/June [72,73].
