Genotoxic and mutagenic effects of sewage sludge on higher plants

(1979) reported an increase in the concentration of the following heavy metals in organs of pigs fed with cabbage cultivated in sewage sludge: Cd, Cu, Ni and Zn, in the bladder; Cd, Pb and Zn, in the liver; Zn in the muscles; and Cd in the spleen. In the liver of these animals, there was also a significant increase in the concentration of PCBs and levels of aryl hydroxylase hydrocarbon, responsible for processes of detoxification that can activate pro-carcinogens (Kiyohara et al., 1990). However, during the experiment, the animals did not show signs of intoxication.
